Cyclopentane is a colorless liquid with a smell like petrol. It is classified as an alicyclic hydrocarbon. This means it is a type of hydrocarbon that contains a ring of atoms. Specifically, it belongs to a class of chemicals called cycloalkanes. Cycloalkanes are alkanes that possess one or more carbon rings. The chemical formula for cyclopentane is C5H10. This formula tells us the molecule contains five carbon atoms. Each carbon atom is bonded to two hydrogen atoms. These atoms are arranged above and below the plane of the ring.

The molecular structure of cyclopentane is quite complex. In a perfect regular pentagon, every angle is 108 degrees. This is slightly less than the 109.47 degree angle found in a perfect tetrahedron. Because of this, cyclopentane is not a flat, planar molecule. Instead, the ring puckers or bends. This puckering happens to increase the distance between the hydrogen atoms. There are two specific shapes, or conformations, that the molecule takes to reach low energy states. One is called the "envelope" conformation, which has mirror symmetry. The other is the "half-chair" conformation, which has two-fold rotational symmetry. In these shapes, the angles and bond lengths cannot all be equal.

Scientists use different chemical processes to produce cyclopentane. One method is called cracking. This involves breaking down cyclohexane. This process requires alumina, high temperature, and high pressure. Another method is known as catalytic reforming. In this process, a substance called 2-methylbutane is passed over a hot platinum surface. This reaction converts the 2-methylbutane into cyclopentane. The German chemist Johannes Wislicenus first prepared this substance in 1893. His discovery helped chemists understand how these ring structures work.

One of the most important uses for cyclopentane is in manufacturing. It serves as a blowing agent for polyurethane insulating foam. A blowing agent helps create the bubbles in the foam. Cyclopentane is used to replace older agents like CFC-11 and HCFC-141b. Those older chemicals were known to deplete the ozone layer. This foam is used to insulate domestic appliances. You might find it inside your refrigerator or your freezer. Because cyclopentane is highly flammable, many appliances carry warning labels.

Cyclopentane also appears in other industrial and fuel applications. It is used to manufacture synthetic resins and rubber adhesives. It is also a minor component in automobile fuel. In the United States, its presence in gasoline varied between 0.2% and 1.6% in the early 1990s. By 2011, the amount in gasoline was between 0.1% and 1.7%. The substance has different octane numbers depending on the test. Its research octane number is reported at 101 or 103. Its motor octane number is reported at 85 or 86.

Specialized versions of this molecule are used in extreme environments. Scientists use Multiple Alkylated Cyclopentane lubricants, or MAC lubricants. One example is 1,3,4-tri-(octyldodecyl) cyclopentane. These lubricants have low volatility, meaning they do not evaporate easily. Because of this trait, NASA uses them in space applications. Additionally, cyclopentane can be fluorinated. This creates new compounds like perfluorocyclopentane. These species are possible candidates for specialty solvents or refrigerants.

Beyond machines, the cyclopentane ring is very important in biology. The ring structure is pervasive in many natural products. It is a part of most steroids and prostaglandins. It is also found in some lipids, which are types of fats. This shows that the same chemical structures we use in industry exist in living things. However, cyclopentane requires careful handling. It is highly flammable and can cause respiratory arrest if inhaled. Safety precautions are necessary to prevent leaks and accidental ignition.
