Cyclopentane is a clear liquid that smells like petrol. It belongs to a group of chemicals called cycloalkanes. These are molecules that contain one or more rings of carbon atoms. Cyclopentane has the chemical formula C5H10. This means it is made of five carbon atoms. Each of those atoms is bonded to two hydrogen atoms. The atoms form a ring shape. This substance is highly flammable, which means it catches fire very easily.

Scientists can make this liquid in a few different ways. One way is by cracking a substance called cyclohexane. This happens when researchers use high temperature and pressure with alumina. Another way involves passing 2-methylbutane over a hot platinum surface. This process is known as catalytic reforming. The shape of the molecule is also very interesting. It is not a flat, regular pentagon. Instead, the ring puckers to keep the hydrogen atoms further apart. This puckering creates shapes called the "envelope" and the "half-chair."

A German chemist named Johannes Wislicenus first prepared it. He did this work back in the year 1893. Since then, people have found many uses for it. It is a very important tool in making things. It can be used to create synthetic resins and rubber adhesives. It is also a small part of the gasoline used in cars. In the US, it made up between 0.2 and 1.6% of gasoline in the early 1990s. By 2011, the amount in gasoline was between 0.1 and 1.7%.

One of its biggest jobs is helping to keep things cold. Cyclopentane is used as a blowing agent to make polyurethane insulating foam. This foam is used to insulate domestic appliances. You might find it inside your refrigerator or your freezer. It replaced older agents that were bad for the ozone layer. Because it can catch fire, many fridges have warning labels on them.

Some special versions, called MAC lubricants, are used by NASA. These are used in space applications because they do not evaporate easily.

Even though we use it in factories, cyclopentane is also part of nature. The cyclopentane ring shape is found in many natural products. It is a part of most steroids and prostaglandins. It is also found in some lipids, which are fats. This shows how a simple ring of atoms can be very important. It works in our machines and also in living things. Understanding these small shapes helps us understand the big world.
