Curitiba is the capital and largest city of the state of Paraná in southern Brazil.

It sits on a high plateau about 930 meters above sea level. The city is a vital cultural, political, and economic hub for Latin America. It is also home to the Federal University of Paraná, which was established in 1912.

The city's population is approximately 1,829,225 people. This makes it the eighth most populous city in Brazil. The larger Curitiba Metropolitan area includes 29 municipalities. This region has a total population exceeding 3,559,366 people.

The geography of the region is defined by its topography and water systems. Curitiba is located near the Atlantic margin of the Brazilian Highlands. To the west, you can find the seaport of Paranaguá. The city's terrain consists of smooth, rounded hills. The highest point reaches 1,011 meters in the north. The landscape is surrounded by mountain ranges like the Serra do Mar.

Six different hydrographic basins exist within the municipal territory. These basins include the Atuba, Belém, Barigui, Passaúna, and Padilhas stream. The most extensive basin is the Barigui River. It covers 139.9 km² and flows from north to south. All these rivers eventually flow into the Iguaçu River.

Because the terrain is relatively flat, the city faces specific environmental challenges. Heavy rainfall often causes significant flooding in the local rivers. This is a constant concern for the public administration. To manage this, the city uses various engineering and nature-based solutions. Since the 1970s, planners have built parks with artificial lakes. These lakes absorb and retain water to minimize flood impacts. Many rivers are also undergoing a process called canalization. This involves directing the water into artificial channels. The city also uses environmental education and strict legislation to protect its waterways.

Curitiba's history is a story of shifting economic drivers and migration. In the late 17th century, the economy relied on mineral extraction and subsistence farming. The 19th century brought a successful cattle trade. Curitiba served as an important trading post for cattlemen. Between 1850 and 1950, the city expanded through logging and agriculture. Settlers harvested Araucaria angustifolia, mate, and coffee. Later, they grew wheat, corn, and soybeans.

These groups added immense cultural diversity to the region. In the early 20th century, the yerba mate industry brought great wealth. Owners of mate mills built grand mansions in the Batel and Alto da Glória districts.

The modern identity of Curitiba was shaped by innovative urban planning. In the 1940s, Alfred Agache proposed a "star" plan of boulevards. While parts were followed, the plan was too expensive to finish. By 1960, the population reached 430,000 people. This growth required a new approach to city management. A group of planners led by Jaime Lerner developed the Curitiba Master Plan. They focused on high-speed linear transit pathways. They also aimed to reduce downtown traffic and urban sprawl. They worked to provide inexpensive public transit and preserve the historic district.

This planning allowed the population to grow to over one million people.

The climate in Curitiba is classified as temperate oceanic. This means the weather is often mild and damp. Winters in July feature low average minimum temperatures. On the coldest days, nighttime temperatures can drop below freezing. Snowfall has been recorded in several years, including 1889 and 2020.

Summers are warmer, with average daytime temperatures around 25°C. However, temperatures can rise above 30°C on very hot days. The city's location on a plateau means cold fronts arrive year-round. These fronts often come from Antarctica or Argentina. The local vegetation is part of the Ombrophilous Mixed Forest. You can find many protected Paraná pine trees throughout the area.

The city also features many purple and yellow ipê trees.

Today, Curitiba is recognized globally for its sustainability and economic strength. It has a very high Human Development Index of 0.856. In 2010, it received the Global Sustainable City Award. The economy is driven by industry and services. It is the seventh largest economy in Brazil. The city is also a major destination for investment. In 2025, the unemployment rate was 4.3%, which was one of the lowest in Brazil. Curitiba has also hosted major international events. It was a host city for both the 1950 and 2014 FIFA World Cups.
