Initially, the region focused on pastures, cattle, and subsistence agriculture. This changed in the 1870s when coffee crops arrived. Coffee cultivation brought immense wealth and rapid development. By the 1880s, the city had become the largest coffee producer in the world. People often called coffee "green gold" because of its high value.

This coffee boom caused a "gold rush" that attracted people from many places. The Mogiana Railway helped connect the city to São Paulo and the port of Santos. Following the abolition of slavery in Brazil in 1888, a strong labor market emerged. This era saw many immigrants arrive at the coffee farms. People came from Europe, including Italy, Portugal, Spain, and Germany. Immigrants also arrived from Japan. Some Italians settled in the "Núcleo Colonial Antonio Prado," which helped form several local districts.

The population of Ribeirão Preto is very diverse. It includes descendants of Native Amerindians, Africans, and various immigrant groups. In 1902, over 50% of the city's residents were born in Italy. Later, in the 1990s, many migrants arrived from the northeast of Brazil. These migrants often worked in orange groves and sugar cane plantations.

Today, the city has a population of approximately 720,216 people. The entire metropolitan area contains about 1.17 million inhabitants. The city is a major economic force, holding the 30th largest gross national product (GNP) in Brazil.

In the second half of the 20th century, the economy shifted. After the stock market crash of 1929, coffee lost value compared to the industrial sector. The city began investing heavily in new fields. These included health, biotechnology, bioenergy, and information technology. In 2010, these advancements led to the city being declared a Technological Center.
