People often call them "fair weather cumulus." They are very common during the summer. These clouds do not grow very tall. They have very little vertical extent. This means they stay flat instead of growing up. They are important for understanding the weather.

These clouds form in a specific way. Warm air rises from the ground. We call these rising air currents thermals. These thermals move at 2 to 5 meters per second. The air moves up until it reaches a condensation level. At this point, the cloud forms. Most of these clouds disappear a few minutes after they appear. However, they can change into larger clouds if the air is active.

Scientists look at these clouds to predict the weather. Morning cumulus humilis can show an unstable atmosphere. They are not rain clouds themselves. But they might come before a storm. They can grow into cumulus mediocris clouds. Later, they might become huge cumulus congestus clouds. These larger clouds can lead to bad weather in the afternoon. If the sky is clear, the weather stays nice for hours.

There are many facts about where they live. They usually form at low altitudes. This is between 500 and 3,000 meters. In hot countries, they can go higher. They also appear high over mountain terrain. Sometimes, thin cirrostratus clouds sit above them. These clouds block heat from the sun. This creates an inversion. The inversion makes the puffy clouds stay flat. This might mean rain arrives in 12 to 24 hours.

These clouds affect how people fly. The air below the cloud base can be turbulent. This turbulence is caused by the thermals. It can make a ride in a light aircraft uncomfortable. Some pilots climb above the clouds to find smooth air. Other pilots actually look for these clouds. Glider pilots seek out the rising air. They use the thermals to gain altitude and fly higher.
