Portugal ruled Brazil as a colony for over three hundred years. About one million Portuguese settlers arrived during this time. They brought their language and their religion to the land. The Indigenous people lived there first and had much contact with settlers. Many Indigenous words are still used in Brazilian Portuguese today. For example, many names for plants and animals come from the Old Tupi language. This shows how the different groups influenced each other.

Food is another way to see this rich history.

In 1922, a big event called Modern Art Week happened in São Paulo. Artists like Tarsila do Amaral wanted to explore Brazilian culture. They wanted to create something new and unique. Later, in the 1960s, a music movement called Tropicalismo began. Leaders like Gilberto Gil used music to speak against strict rules. This movement helped people express themselves through song. Music remains a very important way for people to connect.

Language and religion help tie the many people together.

About 99% of people in Brazil speak Portuguese. This shared language is a strong part of their identity. Most people are also Roman Catholics. This religion was brought by Portuguese Jesuits in 1549. However, African traditions also shaped religious life. In places like Bahia, the Candomblé religion is very important. It uses deities called orixá from Yoruba traditions. This mix of beliefs shows how many cultures live as one.
