It is the smallest region in all of Brazil. In fact, it only covers about 6.76% of the country's land. The area is even smaller than the state of Minas Gerais. Many immigrants from Europe moved here to work as farmers. German settlers arrived starting in 1824. They settled in places like São Leopoldo. By 1904, about 50,000 Germans lived in that state. In Santa Catarina, groups like the Hamburg Colonization Society helped people settle. This led to the growth of cities like Blumenau and Joinville.
