Cultural diffusion

language culture Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Ideas and customs can move from one group to another. This is called cultural diffusion. It is how people share things like art, music, and tools. It is also how they share religions and languages.

There are many ways this happens. One way is through moving. When people move to new lands, they bring their ways with them. This is called relocation diffusion. Another way is through contact. People might trade goods or marry someone from a new culture. This is direct diffusion.

Sometimes, ideas move through a middle person. This is indirect diffusion. For example, Mexican food is popular in Canada. It may travel through the United States first. Ideas can also move through books or the internet. This is very common today.

There are different ways ideas spread. Expansion diffusion happens when an idea stays strong in its home but also moves out. Hierarchical diffusion happens when ideas move from big cities to small towns. Stimulus diffusion is when people take a main idea but change it. For example, early people in Siberia saw others raise cattle. They did not use cattle, but they started raising reindeer instead.
