Cryptocurrency is a type of digital money that lives on computer networks.

Unlike the money in your bank, it does not rely on a central authority. This means no single government or bank controls how it works. Instead, the system uses a digital ledger called a blockchain.

This ledger is a computerized database that tracks everything. It records who owns each coin and how they move. The system also controls how new coins are created. This allows people to trade without needing a middleman to watch them.

How does this digital system stay safe and organized? It uses a consensus mechanism, which is a way for the network to agree on the truth.

One way is called proof of work. In this system, people called miners use computers to validate and timestamp transactions. They add these records to the ledger to keep it balanced. Another way is called proof of stake. In this version, people who hold the coins help verify the transactions.

This method can be much more energy-efficient. For example, Ethereum switched to proof of stake to cut its energy use by 99.9%.

People have been working on digital money for a long time. In 1983, David Chaum thought of something called ecash. Later, in 1998, Wei Dai described a system called b-money. Nick Szabo also described a system called bit gold. However, the first real cryptocurrency was bitcoin.

A person using the name Satoshi Nakamoto released bitcoin in 2009. Since then, many other types of coins have appeared. These are often called altcoins because they are alternatives to bitcoin.

There are many different kinds of digital assets today. By June 2023, there were more than 25,000 different cryptocurrencies. Some are called stablecoins because they try to keep a steady value. Others are memecoins, which often start from internet jokes like Dogecoin.

The market for these assets is huge. In April 2025, the total market value was about US$2.8 trillion. Some countries even use them in special ways. El Salvador became the first country to accept bitcoin as legal tender in June 2021.

You might see people talking about physical bitcoin coins.

These are often made of silver, brass, or aluminum. It is important to know that these metal coins are just for collecting. They do not hold real value by themselves. They are like souvenirs rather than actual money. Most cryptocurrency stays strictly digital. It is a new way to think about how we use value and technology in our daily lives.
