Cryptocurrency is a type of digital money.

It lives on a computer network. It does not need a central authority. This means no single bank or government controls it. Instead, a computer database keeps track of everything. This database is called a blockchain.

The blockchain records who owns each coin. It also shows when coins move from one person to another.

Different systems use different ways to keep the records safe. In a proof-of-work system, people called miners use computers to check transactions. In a proof-of-stake system, people who own the coins help verify them.
