These ships are different from ocean liners. Ocean liners are built for transport from one place to another. Cruise ships instead go on round-trip voyages to many different ports. At these ports, passengers can go on shore excursions. These are guided tours on land.

Modern cruise ships focus on comfort rather than speed or agility. Some people even call them balcony-laden floating condominiums. They are designed to be places where people relax while they travel.

Life on a cruise ship works a lot like staying in a floating hotel.

The ship has a complete hospitality staff to help the regular crew. Most ships have many different places to eat. Traditionally, restaurants offered two dinner services called early and late dining. Passengers were given a set time for their meals. Now, a recent trend allows people to dine whenever they want. Many ships also have casual buffet-style eateries for quick meals. This way, there is always food ready for the travelers.

Cruising has a very long history.

In 1833, a ship named Francesco I sailed from Naples. It carried nobles and royals on a three-month trip. This voyage visited places like Malta, Athens, and Constantinople. The company P&O began offering luxury cruises in 1844. They are known as the world's oldest cruise line. Later, the first ship built only for luxury cruising was completed in 1900. It was designed by Albert Ballin of the Hamburg-America Line.

Today, the cruise industry is a massive part of world tourism.

There were 302 cruise ships operating worldwide recently. These ships can carry a combined 664,602 passengers. Every year, over 19 million people travel by cruise. The industry is worth about $29.4 billion per year. Since 2001, at least nine new ships have been built every year. However, the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 caused the industry to shut down. In 2024, the average age of a cruise ship was 17.5 years.

Cruise ships have grown from small boats into giant megaships.

In the late 1980s, ships like the Sovereign of the Seas changed everything. These were the first megaships built just for cruising. They added things like multi-story lobbies and glass elevators. Some very large ships, like the Oasis-class, are incredibly wide. They even have outdoor areas like Central Park in the middle. These ships have grown much larger in just two short decades. They are now much wider and hold many more people than older ships.
