CRRC is a massive company based in China. It specializes in making rolling stock, which is the technical term for vehicles that move on rails. This includes everything from heavy freight cars to fast passenger trains. CRRC is currently the largest rolling stock manufacturer in the entire world. It earns more money from these sales than its main competitors, Alstom and Siemens. The company is state-owned, meaning it is supervised by the Chinese government.

The company grew through a major merger in 2015. Before this, two separate groups called CNR and CSR existed. They were actually once a single company called LORIC. In 2002, the original company was split into two pieces. In late 2014, the two groups agreed to join back together. This merger officially took effect on June 1, 2015. The goal was to help the new company work more efficiently. It also helped them compete better in the global market.

CRRC has expanded its work to many different countries. In 2014, they won a large bid for metro cars in Massachusetts. This led to the building of an assembly plant in Springfield. They also opened a plant in Batu Gajah, Malaysia, in 2015. In Argentina, they have provided many types of vehicles. This includes 704 EMU cars and 3,500 freight cars. They even bought a company there called Emprendimientos Ferroviarios.

Working in many countries can lead to complicated situations. In the United States, officials investigated if the company's ties to the government were a security risk. The Treasury Department eventually found no risk in their joint ownership. However, some projects faced hard jobs. In Massachusetts, some trains had issues with electrical shorts and loose bolts. This caused delays for the MBTA transit system. In 2024, SEPTA ended an order for rail cars due to quality concerns.

CRRC is a huge part of the world's transport system. It employs over 183,000 people as of 2016. The company also works with many different subsidiaries. For example, CRRC Sifang America focuses on the Chicago market. They also have units like CRRC Massachusetts for Boston and Los Angeles. Their work connects to how people travel every day. Whether by subway or long-distance rail, these machines move millions of people.
