They make many kinds of rail transport. This includes high-speed trains and suburban trains for cities. They also build trams and locomotives. Beyond trains, they work in energy and rail services. They even make signaling tools to keep tracks safe. Their work helps people travel long distances quickly.

Many of their machines work by using electricity or wind. For example, they make wind turbines to catch the wind.

These turbines turn wind into power. They also make equipment for hydropower plants. These plants use moving water to create energy. In the past, they even made huge generators for nuclear power plants. One generator they built set a world record with 1500 MW of output. They also make gas turbines to help create power.

The company has a very long history that started in 1928. It began when two French companies merged together. At first, the name was spelled Alsthom. In 1932, they grew by buying a company that made electric locomotives. Later, they joined with a shipbuilder in 1976. This helped them expand into the marine business. In 1989, they merged with a British company to form GEC Alsthom. This helped them sell their products to more countries. Eventually, they dropped the 'h' and became Alstom.

Alstom is famous for making very fast trains. They built the TGV, which is a high-speed train. The TGV broke world speed records in 1981 and again in 1990. In 2001, a train set a record by traveling from Calais to Marseille in 3 hours and 29 minutes.

They also made the Class 373 trains.

These trains were built for the Eurostar service. They travel through the Channel Tunnel between England, France, and Belgium. This was a big job for the company in the 1990s.

You can see Alstom's work in many different parts of the world. They have factories in places like Quebec, Canada. They also build things in France and work on projects in Iraq. In 2014, they won a large contract to update trains in Mexico City. Their machines help people in cities like Washington, D.C., too.
