Criticism of religion is the study of questioning religious ideas. People look at whether these beliefs are true or useful. Some thinkers believe religion might be harmful to people or society. Others suggest it could slow down the progress of science. Critics may also see it as a tool used for political control. This questioning has been happening for a very long time.

History shows that people have questioned faith for centuries. In ancient Greece, a man named Diagoras was an early critic. In the 1st century BCE, a Roman poet named Lucretius wrote about it. He believed religion came from fear and not knowing how nature works. During the Islamic Golden Age, the philosopher Al-Ma'arri also shared critical views. In the 1700s, thinkers like Voltaire and David Hume questioned religious ideas too.

Some people view religion as a social construct. This means they think it was made by humans to meet certain needs. For example, Daniel Dennett suggests many religions formed when people did not understand the stars or the body. These stories might have provided comfort during hard times. Richard Dawkins notes that religion can also build communities. However, he also argues that holding these beliefs may be irrational today.

Other thinkers have looked at how religion affects society and the mind. Karl Marx believed religion could be a tool for those in power. He thought it might help people ignore the real causes of their suffering. Richard Dawkins also used the word "memes" to describe how ideas spread like viruses. Some modern thinkers, like Sam Harris, compare religious experiences to mental health states. They wonder if certain brain activities cause people to feel holy.

Scientists also study the brain to understand these feelings. Researchers have looked at how the brain reacts during prayer or meditation. Some believe that activity in certain parts of the brain creates spiritual feelings. For instance, Michael Persinger used a "God helmet" to study these experiences. Others suggest that things like epilepsy might be linked to visions. Even with all this study, people still have many different views.
