Critical theory is a special way of looking at our world. It is not just about learning facts. Instead, it looks at how power works in society.

Many thinkers believe that power shapes what we call truth. They argue that social structures are not always neutral. Instead, these structures often favor dominant groups over others. This way of thinking seeks to find out how people are held back. It aims to understand the deep ways that groups are treated differently.

This way of thinking uses a method called praxis. Praxis means combining ideas with real action.

Most theories only try to describe how things are. Critical theory wants to change things to make them better. It looks at how education and culture keep power in place. It also examines how different forms of unfairness overlap. By using these ideas, people can work together for social change. This turns thinking into a tool for helping others.

History shows us where these ideas began. The first group of thinkers was the Frankfurt School.

They started their work in the 1920s. Max Horkheimer was a very important leader in this group. He wrote a famous essay in 1937 about this topic. Other famous names include Theodor Adorno and Herbert Marcuse. They wanted to expand old ideas about economics. They added new ideas from psychology and philosophy to their work. This helped them understand how people think and act.

Many different people have added to these ideas over time.

Jürgen Habermas focused on how language and communication work. Later, thinkers like Michel Foucault and Jacques Derrida changed the conversation. They looked closely at how institutions and meaning work. Today, these ideas are used in many places. People use them to study law, history, and even animal rights. They also use them to look at race and gender. The scope of these ideas has grown very large.

Not everyone agrees with these ways of thinking. Some critics worry that these ideas rely too much on personal stories.

Other critics say they do not follow traditional scientific methods. They argue that it can be hard to prove these ideas are true. Some people feel the ideas go against the rules of being objective. Even with these disagreements, the study continues to grow. It remains a major part of how we talk about society. It asks us to keep wondering about the world around us.
