Critical theory is a way of thinking about our world. It looks at how power works in society. Some groups have more power than others. These thinkers study how that power affects people. They believe that what we call "truth" is shaped by power. They do not think facts are always neutral. Instead, they say our views depend on our history and social life.

This way of thinking started in the 1920s. A group called the Frankfurt School began this work. Famous thinkers like Max Horkheimer were part of it. They wanted to do more than just describe the world. They wanted to change it to make it fair. They called this "praxis." Praxis means using ideas to take real action.

Later, other thinkers added new ideas. They looked at how language and culture work. Today, these ideas are used in many areas. People use them to study law, history, and even animals. Some critics disagree with these ideas. They worry that these thinkers do not use traditional science. They also think the ideas focus too much on personal stories.
