It lived during the Late Cretaceous period, about 107 to 73 million years ago. This shark was an apex predator in its ocean home. An apex predator is an animal at the top of the food chain. It had a body shape very similar to the great white shark we see today. Because it was so powerful, it played a vital role in its ecosystem.

This shark had a very specific way of hunting its food. It had razor-like teeth that were up to 5 centimeters long. These teeth had thick enamel to help with stabbing and slicing. People have been finding pieces of this shark for a long time. In 1822, Gideon Mantell found eight teeth in East Sussex, England. He thought they belonged to modern sharks. Later, a naturalist named Louis Agassiz looked at those same teeth. In 1843, he decided they were from one extinct species. He named it Oxyrhina mantellii to honor Mantell.

Charles H. Sternberg found a great skeleton there in 1890. His son, George F. Sternberg, found even more later on. One skeleton found in 1891 was 4 meters long. It even had the remains of a fish called Xiphactinus in its stomach. These fossils help us see how the shark grew and lived. We know it could live for nearly forty years.

They had a body shape and build very similar to the modern great white shark. This genus is most famous for its type species, *Cretoxyrhina mantelli*. Some paleontologists call it the "Ginsu shark." This name comes from a comparison to a Ginsu knife.

To understand how *Cretoxyrhina* hunted, we can look at its physical tools. The shark possessed razor-like teeth that reached up to 5 centimeters in length. These teeth featured thick enamel, which is the hard outer layer of a tooth. This structure was built for stabbing and slicing through tough prey. Scientists have used hydrodynamic calculations to study how this shark moved. These math models suggest the shark could reach burst speeds of up to 35 kilometers per hour.

*Cretoxyrhina* was a highly successful and widespread predator. It was a cosmopolitan genus, meaning it lived in many different parts of the world. However, its fossils are most frequently found in the Western Interior Seaway of North America.

The shark preferred subtropical to temperate pelagic environments. Pelagic refers to the open ocean waters far from the shore. Even so, it could survive in waters as cold as 15 degrees Celsius. Because it was an apex predator, it played a critical role in maintaining the balance of marine ecosystems. It preyed on a wide variety of animals, including mosasaurs, plesiosaurs, and other sharks. It even occasionally ate pterosaurs and dinosaurs.

The history of discovering *Cretoxyrhina* began in the early 19th century. In 1822, the English paleontologist Gideon Mantell found eight teeth in East Sussex, England. He and his partner, Mary Ann Mantell, originally thought they belonged to modern sharks. In 1843, the Swiss naturalist Louis Agassiz reexamined these teeth. He concluded they belonged to a single extinct species. Agassiz named the species *Oxyrhina mantellii* to honor Mantell. For a long time, many different scientists described various teeth as separate species. This created nearly 30 different names that were actually just variations of the same shark.

Major breakthroughs occurred when paleontologists found complete skeletons in Kansas. In 1890, Charles H. Sternberg discovered the first skeleton. His son, George F. Sternberg, found many more exceptional fossils later.

One famous skeleton, KUVP 247, was found in 1891 and measured 4 meters in length. This fossil was special because it preserved the cartilage of the shark. It even contained the remains of a *Xiphactinus* fish in its stomach. These well-preserved fossils allowed scientists to study the shark's life history. By looking at vertebrae, researchers found the shark grew rapidly in its early years. It reached sexual maturity by age four or five and lived for nearly forty years.

The classification of *Cretoxyrhina* has been a complex journey for scientists. In 1958, Soviet paleontologist Leonid Glickman proposed the new genus name *Cretoxyrhina*. He noted that the dental design was distinct enough to separate it from other groups.

Later, there was some confusion in the scientific community. In 2000, a researcher named Viktor Zhelezko incorrectly suggested the genus should be invalid. However, a 2013 study led by Mikael Siverson corrected this error. This study reinstated the genus *Cretoxyrhina*. Modern research by Kenshu Shimada has also used new techniques to understand the shark's biology. His work has helped improve our reconstructions of how these animals lived.

Eventually, the *Cretoxyrhina* faced a decline and went extinct during the Campanian stage. One reason for this might have been increased competition. Large predators like the giant mosasaur *Tylosaurus* were rising at the same time. Another possible factor was the gradual disappearance of the Western Interior Seaway. As the environment changed, the habitats these sharks relied on began to vanish. The story of *Cretoxyrhina* shows us how closely predators are tied to their environment. When the oceans changed, the mighty "Ginsu shark" could no longer survive.
