How do you know if a shark is a lamniform? You can look for specific body parts. They always have two fins on their backs. They also have an anal fin on their underside. These sharks have five gill slits to help them breathe. Their mouths are very wide. They actually extend behind their eyes.

Some families, like the mackerel sharks, can even keep their bodies warmer than the water around them.

These sharks have a very long history. Scientists found records of them from the Early Cretaceous period. They became a major part of the ocean during that time. They were even more diverse during the Late Cretaceous. Later, they had another big peak during the Paleogene period.

However, they faced a hard time during the K-Pg extinction. This event caused their numbers to drop very low before they grew again.

There are many different kinds of these sharks. The extinct Otodus megalodon was the largest predator ever.

Today, things are quite different. Only 15 species of lamniforms are still alive. This is much smaller than the 290 species in other shark groups. Scientists are not sure why they declined so much. It might be because of changing sea levels or water temperatures.

It is fun to see how these sharks fit into nature. The basking shark is a great example of a filter feeder.

This group is incredibly diverse because it contains both massive hunters and gentle filter feeders. Some members, like the great white shark, are well-known macropredators that hunt large prey. Others, such as the basking shark, are planktivores that eat tiny organisms.

Scientists identify lamniform sharks by several specific physical characteristics. All members of this order possess two dorsal fins on their backs and an anal fin on their underside. They also have exactly five gill slits to help them breathe. A very distinctive feature is their mouth, which extends far back behind the eyes.

Additionally, these sharks lack nictitating membranes, which are protective third eyelids found in some other species. In two specific families, the Lamnidae and Alopiidae, the sharks can maintain a body temperature higher than the surrounding water.

This group can be divided into several distinct families with unique traits. The Lamnidae, or mackerel sharks, are fast-swimming predators with spindle-shaped bodies and large gill openings.

The Alopiidae family includes thresher sharks, which are named for their extremely long tails. The Cetorhinidae family contains the basking shark, the second-largest living fish. This shark is a filter feeder that uses over 5,000 gill rakers to strain plankton from the water.

Other families include the Megachasmidae, which contains the rare megamouth shark, and the Mitsukurinidae, home to the strange, long-snouted goblin shark.

The history of lamniformes spans millions of years of evolutionary change. While some scientists debate if the Palaeocarcharias from the Late Jurassic was a lamniform, the earliest clear records appear in the Early Cretaceous. During the Cretaceous period, these sharks underwent an adaptive radiation, meaning they rapidly evolved into many new forms. They reached their highest level of diversity during the Late Cretaceous. However, they suffered a severe decline during the K-Pg extinction event. They eventually rebounded to a high diversity peak during the Paleogene, but their numbers have changed significantly since then.

In recent geological history, the number of lamniform species has declined sharply. Over the last 20 million years, the group has dwindled to only 15 living species. This is a small number compared to the Carcharhiniformes order, which has over 290 extant species.

Scientists are not entirely certain why this decline happened. They believe it may be due to biotic factors, such as competition with other species. Non-biotic factors, including changes in sea levels and ocean temperatures, may also have played a role.

Some extinct members of this order were truly massive. The most famous was the Otodus megalodon, which is considered the largest macropredatory shark to ever live.

Other extinct families, like the Anacoracidae, included the Squalicorax or "crow sharks," which were found worldwide during the Cretaceous. There was also the unusual Aquilolamna, a shark from the Late Cretaceous that had long, winglike pectoral fins.

These fossils help scientists understand how much the group has changed over time.

Understanding lamniformes helps us see how different animals occupy specific roles in the ocean. The basking shark provides a great example of how a large animal can survive by eating tiny food. It cruises through the water, straining about 1.5 million liters of water every hour through its gills.

The megamouth shark also uses a similar method, swimming with a massive mouth open to catch plankton and jellyfish. Even the small crocodile shark shows specialized behavior, moving between different ocean depths at night to feed.
