Carpet sharks are a large group of sharks. 



Carpet sharks are a very diverse group of sharks. They belong to a group called Orectolobiformes. Many of these sharks have beautiful, swirling patterns. These patterns look like fancy rugs or carpets. 

These sharks have a few special body parts. They all have five gill slits for breathing. They also have two fins on their backs. Most species have barbels on their faces. Barbels are small, whisker-like organs that help them feel things.

The Ginglymostomatidae family contains nurse sharks, which are docile bottom-dwellers. Bamboo sharks belong to the Hemiscylliidae family and are known for their long tails. The Orectolobidae family includes wobbegong sharks, which use bold patterns for camouflage. 
The history of Orectolobiformes stretches back to the Early Jurassic period. Scientists have identified several ancient genera in the fossil record. These include Folipistrix, which lived in what is now Belgium and Germany. Other ancient genera include Palaeobrachaelurus and Annea. These fossils provide a timeline for how these sharks have evolved over millions of years. 
Reproduction methods vary significantly across the different species. Some carpet sharks are oviparous, meaning they lay eggs. Some females will even push their egg cases into rocky crevices for protection. Other species are ovoviviparous, meaning they retain fertilized eggs inside the mother's oviduct. In these cases, the embryos initially feed on their own yolk sacs. Later, they consume nutrients secreted by the walls of the oviduct. When these young are born, they are in an advanced state and ready to live independently. 
Most carpet sharks live in tropical and temperate waters. They are most commonly found in the western Indo-Pacific region. Many species are benthic, meaning they live and feed on the seabed. They use their patterns to blend in with the ocean floor. This camouflage helps wobbegongs act as ambush predators. They lie hidden until prey, such as molluscs or crustaceans, approaches. This specialized way of life connects their physical appearance directly to their survival in the ecosystem.
