Cranberry juice

language culture Maturity 5-7 Next article →

Cranberry juice is a bright red liquid made from a tart fruit. People enjoy it in many different ways. You might find it as a pure juice or a dried snack. It can also be a thick sauce or even a powder. Some people drink a blend called a cranberry juice cocktail. This blend usually has about 28% cranberry juice. The rest is often water and other juices like apple or grape. Sugar is often added to make the sour taste better.

Making this juice is a very careful process. Most juice comes from the American cranberry. Farmers in Canada grow these in places like Nova Scotia and Quebec. They often use a method called wet harvesting to pick them. A machine called a water reel harvester uses paddles to shake the berries from the vines. Then, a large suction pipe pulls them up. The berries go to a plant to be crushed and heated. Finally, they are pressed to make a concentrate.

There is a long history of people using cranberry juice for health. Many believe it helps prevent urinary tract infections, or UTIs. Scientists have studied this for a long time. In 2008, some evidence suggested it might help. However, a study in 2012 said it was not as effective as people thought. A review in 2017 showed it might help people with infections that keep coming back. By 2023, researchers found it might help children and some women. Still, the evidence is not the same for everyone.

There are many interesting facts about what is inside the juice. A single cup of fortified juice has 107 calories. It is mostly water, which makes up 86% of the drink. It also has 11% carbohydrates. Most juice has vitamin C added to keep it fresh. This juice is very acidic with a pH of about 2.6. This high acid level can sometimes wear down tooth enamel. Because of this, some juices use sweeteners to change the taste.

Companies use special ways to keep the juice safe to drink. They often use heat to kill tiny germs that cause spoilage. This is called thermal processing. Some new methods use high pressure instead of heat. This is called high pressure processing, or HHP. It uses 80,000 psi of pressure to clean the juice. Another way is using a pulsed electric field, or PEF. This uses electricity to stop harmful microbes. These methods help keep the color and flavor just right.
