Craig Venter is a famous American scientist. He studies the tiny instructions inside all living things. These instructions are called a genome. Venter has done many big things in science. He led a team to map the human genome. He also worked to create synthetic life.

His work helps us understand how life works. This is why he is very important.

One way Venter works is through shotgun sequencing. This is a fast way to read DNA. Think of a book cut into tiny pieces. You read every small piece very quickly. Then, you put them all back together. This helps scientists map a whole genome. Venter used this method to speed up science. It helped finish the human genome map early. This way of working is now very common.

Venter grew up in Utah and California. He was not always a top student. He loved being on the water in boats. He later served in the Navy in Vietnam. This time changed how he saw life. He decided he wanted to study medicine. He went to the University of California, San Diego. He earned his PhD there in 1975. This helped him start his long science career.

Venter has started many groups for science. He founded Celera Genomics to study DNA. He also started the J. Craig Venter Institute. This institute is a nonprofit group. It has buildings in La Jolla and Maryland.

In 2000, he helped map the human genome. This was a huge moment for the world. He even shared the news with world leaders. His work has won many big prizes.

Venter's work links to many things we know. He studies how to make clean fuels. He uses tiny living things to do this. He even used his own yacht, Sorcerer II. He sailed around the world to study the ocean. He wanted to see tiny life in the sea. This is part of the Global Ocean Sampling Expedition. His work helps us protect our planet and ourselves.
