A cover version is a new way to perform a song.

It happens when a musician records a song written by someone else. In the past, covers were often used to compete with the original. Musicians wanted to release their own version at the same time. This helped them try to reach the top of the hit parades. Today, the word means any version made after the first one. Many artists use covers as a tribute to a great singer.

It is a way to show respect through music.

There are three main ways people perform covers today. First, tribute acts focus on just one famous artist. Bands like The Fab Four play only music by The Beatles. Some even add a fun twist to the sound. For example, Dread Zeppelin plays Led Zeppelin songs as reggae music. Second, cover bands play many different hits for big crowds. They perform at weddings, parties, or on large cruise ships. They often use computers to help them remember all the lyrics.

Third, revivalist bands work to keep old music styles alive. They do not just want to make people feel nostalgic. Instead, they want to show new, young audiences how great old music can be. The group Sha Na Na started in 1969 to celebrate 1950s doo-wop music. The Blues Brothers began in 1978 to honor soul and R&B. They even called themselves evangelists for the blues. These artists help ensure that musical history is never forgotten.

History shows how much music has changed over many years. Before the mid-20th century, songs were often seen as live events. People used sheet music to learn tunes and play them at home. In the early 1900s, record labels often copied successful hits to make money. An example is the song "Ain't She Sweet." It was popular in 1927 and was later recorded by The Beatles in 1964.

This shows how a single song can live for decades.

Laws help manage how these new versions are made. In the United States, the Copyright Act of 1909 gives musicians certain rights. A singer can record a cover if they get a mechanical license. This is a legal agreement that allows the new version to exist. The singer pays a standard fee to the original songwriter. This way, everyone is treated fairly under the law.
