County (United States)

society Maturity 11-13 Next article →

A county is a way to divide a state into smaller parts. These parts help the state manage land and people. Most of the 50 states in the U.S. use counties to do this work.

Some states use different names for these areas. Louisiana calls them parishes because of its history with the Catholic Church. Alaska uses a system called boroughs. The U.S. Census Bureau calls these different names "county equivalents." This means they do the same kind of job as a county.

How counties work can change depending on the state law. Some counties provide services to small towns or areas without their own government. In some places, a city and a county join together. This is called a consolidated city-county. This means the city and the county become one single group. There are 40 of these in the United States. Examples include the City and County of Denver in Colorado. Other cities, like Baltimore in Maryland, are independent. This means they do not belong to any county at all.

The idea of a county began a long time ago in England. English colonists brought this idea to North America. They used it to help manage their new colonies. Virginia created the first counties to help with the workload in Jamestown. In 1634, the colony was divided into eight counties. These included James City and Henrico. Maryland made its first county, St. Mary's, in 1637. Pennsylvania and New York also gave a lot of power to their county governments. This set a pattern for much of the country.

There are many different sizes of counties in the U.S. The number of counties in a state can range from three in Delaware to 254 in Texas. There are 3,144 counties and equivalents in the 50 states and D.C. If you count the territories, the total is 3,244. Populations in these areas vary a lot too. In 2017, more than half of the U.S. population lived in just 143 counties. The five most populous counties in 2017 were Los Angeles, Cook, Harris, Maricopa, and San Diego.

Understanding counties helps you see how local government works. It connects the big state government to your own neighborhood. Some counties are very old and have records from the 1630s. Others are very new, like Broomfield, Colorado, which started in 2001. Even the U.S. territories have their own versions of counties. For example, American Samoa has districts and atolls that act like counties. This system helps keep things organized across the whole country.
