A county is a part of a state. It helps a state manage its land and people. Most of the 50 states use counties.

Some states use different names. Louisiana calls them parishes. Alaska uses boroughs. The Census Bureau calls these "county equivalents." This means they do the same kind of work.

Some cities and counties join together. They become one single group. This is called a consolidated city-county. This helps the city and county work as one.

In some places, cities are independent. This means they do not belong to any county at all.

This idea started a long time ago. People brought the idea from England to North America. The first counties were made in Virginia. They helped the leaders manage the new land. Today, there are over 3,000 counties and similar places in the United States. Some states have many counties, like Texas. Other states have very few, like Delaware.
