Coptotermes gestroi

life science Maturity 5-7 Next article →

The Asian subterranean termite is a small bug. It lives under the ground. People call it Coptotermes gestroi. This species is native to Asia. It has spread to many other places. It lives in the West Indies and Mexico. It also lives in Florida. These bugs need warm weather to live well.

Termite groups have three main parts. We call these parts castes. Workers feed the group and care for young bugs. Soldiers protect the group. The queen lays many eggs. Her body grows very large. Workers must feed her. Some bugs are called alates. These are winged reproductives. They fly in large swarms at night. This often happens in the spring. After they fly, they shed their wings. They look for damp soil and wood to start a new home.

These termites are very hungry. They eat wood, paper, and cardboard. They can even eat fabric. They can drill holes in plastic or rubber to find food. They eat wood from the inside of a building. This can make a tree weak. A storm might then knock it down.
