After World War II, many surplus T2 oil tankers were converted into early container ships. A major turning point occurred on April 26, 1956. A ship named Ideal X, owned by Malcom McLean, left Port Newark, New Jersey. This voyage marked the beginning of the modern container revolution.
Container ships are categorized into seven major size classes. Capacity is measured in twenty-foot equivalent units, or TEU. One TEU represents a standard 20-foot container. Many ships use 40-foot containers, which count as 2 TEU. Small vessels under 3,000 TEU are called feeder ships. They often move cargo between smaller ports. Larger ships include the Panamax class, which is limited by the original Panama Canal locks. The Neopanamax class is larger, designed for the new third set of locks opened in 2016.
At the largest end of the scale are Ultra Large Container Vessels (ULCV). These massive ships can carry over 24,000 TEU. Some, like the Maersk Triple E class, measure 400 meters in length. These giants can carry a load equal to 16 or 17 pre-World War II freighter ships. 

Ships are also classified by whether they have their own loading equipment. "Geared" ships have installed cargo cranes, allowing them to visit ports without pier-side cranes. This makes them more flexible for smaller regions. However, they cost more to buy and maintain. Most modern large ships are "gearless," or ungeared. These ships rely on massive, expensive cranes located at the port to move their containers.
