A port is a busy place.

A container port is a busy place for moving goods.

Some ports are by the sea. These are maritime container ports. They move boxes from ships to trucks or trains. The Port Newark-Elizabeth Marine Terminal was the first of these.
Other ports are near big cities. These are inland container ports. They move boxes between trains and trucks. The first one opened in Enola, Pennsylvania, in 1932.
Ports have places to store boxes. These are called container stacks. They stack the boxes in tall piles. Some boxes are full. Other boxes are empty. Full boxes stay for a short time. Empty boxes may stay longer.
One big ship can carry many boxes. For example, one ship might use 19 trains. It might also use 32 barges and 1,560 trucks. This helps get goods to people everywhere.

These ports work by moving cargo from one path to another. In a maritime port, a large ship arrives at a harbor. Huge cranes lift the containers off the ship. The containers then move to a truck or a train. This is how goods travel from the ocean to the land. Inland ports do the same thing for land travel. They help move boxes between different types of ground transport.
People have used these ports for many years. The first inland container port opened in Enola, Pennsylvania. The Pennsylvania Railroad company started it in November 1932. The first maritime container port was Port Newark-Elizabeth in New Jersey. On April 26, 1956, a ship named the Ideal X was used for an experiment. It used standardized containers that were stacked and unloaded. This idea came from the McLean Trucking Company. Later, the Elizabeth Marine Terminal opened in 1962.
Container ports are very large and hold many things. Ports have storage areas called container stacks. Containers are stacked in tall piles in these areas. Some containers are loaded with goods. These stay for a short time while waiting for transport. Other containers are empty. Empty containers might stay in a stack for a longer time. One large ship can carry 18,000 TEU. That is a way to measure how many containers fit.
One big ship can spread its cargo to many places. For example, one ship might use 19 container trains. It might also use 32 barges and 1,560 trucks. This helps get goods to customers far inland. Modern ports like APM Terminal Maasvlakte II use new technology. They use cranes that are controlled from far away. Some ports even work to use renewable energy. This helps them reach zero carbon dioxide emissions.
A container port is a specialized facility designed for transshipment. Transshipment is the process of moving cargo containers between different modes of transport. These ports act as vital hubs in the global supply chain. They allow goods to travel from one vehicle to another for onward transportation.
There are two main types of container ports: maritime and inland. A maritime container port handles cargo moving between ships and land vehicles. These land vehicles are usually trucks or trains. Maritime ports are often part of larger ports located near major harbors.
The process of moving cargo involves several organized steps. When a ship arrives at a maritime port, it carries many containers. These containers must be moved from the ship to the shore. Once on land, the cargo is often distributed across many different transport modes. For example, one large ship might deliver goods to many different customers. A single ship carrying 18,000 TEU can be broken down into many smaller loads. This might include 19 container trains, 32 barges, and 1,560 trucks.
Container ports also provide essential storage for cargo. These storage areas are known as container stacks. In these stacks, containers are piled on top of one another. Ports store both loaded and empty containers in these stacks. The behavior of the cargo in the stack depends on its status. Loaded containers are usually stored for relatively short periods. They are simply waiting for their next vehicle to arrive. Empty containers may be stored for longer periods while awaiting their next use.
The history of these ports began in the early 20th century. The first inland container port opened in Enola, Pennsylvania. The Pennsylvania Railroad company opened this facility in November 1932. The maritime version of these ports developed later. Port Newark-Elizabeth in New Jersey is considered the first maritime container port. On April 26, 1956, a ship named the Ideal X was used for an experiment. This ship used standardized cargo containers that were stacked and unloaded. The McLean Trucking Company developed this concept. Later, the Elizabeth Marine Terminal opened on August 15, 1962.
Modern technology is changing how these ports operate. Some new terminals are becoming much more advanced and sustainable. For example, the APM Terminal Maasvlakte II uses very high-tech equipment. This terminal uses remotely-controlled STS gantry cranes. These cranes allow workers to move containers from a distance. These modern facilities also focus on environmental goals. They use renewable energy to power their operations. Some aim for zero carbon dioxide emissions to protect the environment.
Today, the industry is managed by many large global companies. In 2024, Lloyd's List identified the top ten largest container port operators. These include companies like PSA International and China Merchants Port Holdings. Other major operators are COSCO Shipping Ports and APM Terminals. DP World and Hutchison Port Holdings are also among the leaders. Other names on the list include MSC, International Container Terminal Services, CMA CGM, and Yıldırım Holding. These companies manage the complex movement of goods that keeps the world connected.
