geography Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Connacht is one of the four provinces of Ireland. It sits in the western part of the country. It is the smallest province in terms of land area. It is also the least populous province in Ireland. Today, it is an officially recognized subdivision of the Irish state. While it has no official function for local government, it is a key part of the nation. It is even listed on the ISO-3166-2 system with the code IE-C.

The province is divided into five traditional counties. These are Galway, Leitrim, Mayo, Roscommon, and Sligo. Galway is the only official city in the province. The population of these counties varies greatly. Galway is the largest with 276,451 people. In contrast, Leitrim is the smallest with 35,199 people. The total population for the entire province was 589,338 according to the 2022 census. This follows a long history of population change. In 1841, the population was much higher at 1,418,859. The Great Famine of the 1840s caused a massive decline. The population fell to under 400,000 over the next 120 years.

Physically, Connacht features a very diverse landscape. The west coast is often rugged and inhospitable. This makes the land difficult for agriculture. Many large mountain ranges sit in this region. These include the Twelve Bens, the Maumturks, and the Ox Mountains. The highest point in the province is Mweelrea. It reaches an elevation of 814 meters in County Mayo. The province also contains Killary Harbour. This is one of Ireland's fjords.

Water is another major feature of the geography. Lough Corrib is the largest lake in the province. Other important lakes include Lough Mask, Lough Melvin, and Lough Allen. The River Moy and the River Shannon also flow through the area. Achill is the largest island in Connacht and in all of Ireland. The Aran Islands are also famous. They feature prehistoric forts like Dún Aonghasa. These islands have been popular tourist destinations since the 19th century. Many people visit the Connemara National Park in County Galway to see the natural beauty.

The history of Connacht is tied to ancient dynasties. Before the ninth century, it was a collection of independent Gaelic kingdoms. These included the Uí Maine, the Conmhaicne, and the Delbhna. The name Connacht comes from the Connachta dynasty. This name means "descendants of Conn." Conn was a mythical king known as Conn of the Hundred Battles. Later, the Uí Briúin Aí dynasty rose to power. They ruled as a kingdom and adopted the surname Ua Conchobair.

Two kings greatly increased the power of the kingdom. Tairrdelbach Ua Conchobair reigned from 1088 to 1156. His son, Ruaidri Ua Conchobair, reigned from approximately 1115 to 1198. Both men became the High King of Ireland. Tairrdelbach was a very innovative leader. He built the first stone castles in Ireland. He also dug a six-mile canal to divert the River Suck.

The kingdom faced many changes through the centuries. In the 1230s, civil wars caused the kingdom to collapse. This allowed for Hiberno-Norman settlement. Richard Mór de Burgh became the 1st Baron of Connaught. However, the Norman colony shrank between 1300 and 1360. Battles like the Second Battle of Athenry in 1316 led to a Gaelic resurgence. By the late 1500s, the Tudor conquest began. This period saw Connacht shired into its modern counties. Some Norman families even became entirely Gaelicised over time.

Today, Connacht is a vital center for Irish culture. It has the highest number of Irish language speakers in Ireland. About 39.8% of the population are Irish speakers. This represents more than 202,000 people. There are specific Gaeltacht areas in Mayo and Galway. These are regions where the Irish language is spoken strongly. The province also plays a role in modern politics. It is part of the Midlands–North-West constituency for European Parliament elections.
