It is an autobiography. That means it is a story about his own life. He wrote about his first fifty-three years. He wanted to show his true self to the world. He shared his many personal feelings. He also wrote about his worldly experiences. This was a very new way to write. Before this, most people wrote about religion. Rousseau wrote about being a real person. He even shared his most shameful moments. He told a story about stealing a ribbon. He also wrote about his five children. He said he left them at a hospital. Some parts of his book are not perfectly true. His dates and facts are often wrong. Some people doubt his words. Other scholars believe he was telling the truth. Many writers followed his lead. They began to write their own life stories too. His book changed how people tell stories forever.
