It is a type of writing called an autobiography. This means the author tells the story of his own life. Rousseau wanted to show his true self to the world. He promised to make a portrait that was true to nature. He said his work would have no imitator. This book was a very new way to share a life story.

Most people before him wrote about their religious lives. Earlier famous books were by Saint Augustine and Saint Teresa. Rousseau was different because he focused on worldly experiences. He wrote about his personal feelings and daily life. This helped start a new way for writers to work. Many writers later followed his lead. These writers included Goethe, Wordsworth, and Stendhal.

The book is split into two main parts. Each part has six books inside it. Rousseau wrote the first six books between 1765 and 1767. He wrote the next six books from 1769 to 1770. He even planned a third part for the work. However, he never finished that third part. The book covers fifty-three years of his life up to 1765.

Rousseau was very honest about his hard or shameful moments. He told a story about stealing a ribbon as a servant. He admitted to framing a young girl for that crime. He also wrote about his five children. He explained that he left them at a foundling hospital. These details show his real, human side. He did not try to hide his mistakes.

Some people argue about how much of the book is true. Historians say Rousseau made many mistakes with his dates. Some events in the book are in the wrong order. He also wrote some things that were not correct. Some scholars before 1900 did not believe him. Later, scholars like Pierre-Maurice Masson and Jules Lemaître supported him. The book was published in 1782 after he died.
