In the book, Augustine tells the story of his life. He writes about his youth and the mistakes he made. He felt bad about some of his choices. He also talks about his time following other beliefs. Later, he changed his life and became a Christian. He met a leader named Ambrose who helped him. One day, Augustine heard a child's voice say, "take up and read." He read a part of the Bible and felt a change in his heart.

The book has thirteen parts called books. The first nine parts tell his life story. The last four parts are about deep ideas. He thinks about things like time and how the world was made. He wrote the book as a long prayer to God. He believed God helped him find the right path.
