After World War II, the parks lost some popularity. Some buildings were even torn down during years of neglect. However, new rides and parks like Maimonides Park brought excitement back in recent years.

The history of this place is full of different stories. The Native American Lenape people lived here a long time ago. They might have called it a place of light.

European explorers like Giovanni da Verrazzano saw it in the 1520s. Later, Dutch settlers arrived and gave the islands new names. One theory says the name comes from the Dutch word for rabbit.

This might be because many wild rabbits lived there. Others think it was named after a place in Ireland.
