Conciliation

society Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Sometimes people have a big fight. They may want to solve it. They can use a way called conciliation. This is a way to settle a dispute. A dispute is a disagreement between people.

In this way, a neutral person helps. We call this person a conciliator. This person does not take sides. They help people talk to each other. They can meet with everyone at once. They can also meet with people one by one. The conciliator helps lower tension. They help people understand the issues. This helps the groups find a fair way to agree.

This is not like going to court. In court, a judge makes a choice. In conciliation, the choice is voluntary. This means people choose to do it. It is also private. The conciliator does not make a final rule. They do not call witnesses or look for evidence. They just help the people find a way forward.

Many groups use this method. It helps with peace efforts. It also helps in big groups like law makers. Some helpers work for the government. In the United States, one group is the Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service. In the United Kingdom, a group called Acas helps too.
