You can find them in Mexico and the United States. They like rocky areas and grasslands. These lizards are active during the day. They spend much time basking on top of rocks. This helps them stay warm.

Males and females look very different. Males are bright and colorful. They may have blue-green bodies and yellow stripes.

Females are more plain. They are usually brown or gray. Both have black bands around their necks. This is how they got their name.

These lizards are carnivores. This means they only eat meat. They eat insects like grasshoppers and beetles. They also eat small lizards and snakes. They cannot live on plants alone.

Collared lizards are very fast. They can run on their hind legs. This is called bipedal locomotion. They use this way to escape from danger. They can run as fast as 24 kilometers per hour. Males use their large heads to fight for territory. A big head helps them have a stronger bite.
