Harland David Sanders was an American entrepreneur who founded the Kentucky Fried Chicken restaurant chain, now known as KFC. He is a famous figure in the fast food industry. Sanders became the brand ambassador, a person who represents a company, and the symbol for the entire business. His face and name remain iconic symbols of the company today. His life was marked by many different jobs and many different attempts at success.

Sanders was born on September 9, 1890, in a four-room house near Henryville, Indiana. He was the oldest of three children. His father worked on a farm until a fall broke his leg. After his father died in 1895, his mother worked in a tomato cannery. Because his mother worked for days at a time, young Harland had to cook for his siblings. By age seven, he was already skilled at preparing bread, vegetables, and meat.

His early adulthood was a period of many changing roles. He worked as a farmhand, a painter of horse carriages, and a conductor for a streetcar company. At age 16, he falsified his birth date to enlist in the United States Army. He served as a wagoner in Cuba and received the Cuban Pacification Medal. Later, he worked as a fireman, which is a person who stokes a steam engine. He also tried working in law, insurance sales, and even running a ferry boat company on the Ohio River.

Sanders found his true calling in the food industry during the Great Depression. In 1930, the Shell Oil Company offered him a service station in North Corbin, Kentucky. He began serving fried chicken, country ham, and steaks to his customers. During this time, he developed his famous "secret recipe." He also invented a patented method for cooking chicken using a pressure fryer. This device allowed him to cook the chicken much faster than traditional pan frying.

In 1935, the Governor of Kentucky commissioned him as a Kentucky Colonel. This was a title of honor. His restaurant gained fame when food critic Duncan Hines included it in a guide to restaurants in 1939. However, his original restaurant was destroyed by a fire in 1939. He rebuilt it as a motel with a 140-seat restaurant. In 1952, he began the process of franchising his recipe. A franchise is a business where an owner pays to use a famous name and system.

The first KFC franchise opened in South Salt Lake, Utah, in 1952. This location was operated by Pete Harman. In that first year, sales of the fried chicken products more than tripled. The name "Kentucky Fried Chicken" was actually coined by a sign painter named Don Anderson. Sanders spent much of his later life traveling the country to grow the business. He often slept in his car while visiting restaurants to negotiate new franchise rights.

By the mid-1960s, the company had expanded internationally to places like Canada, the United Kingdom, and Australia. The rapid growth became overwhelming for Sanders. In 1964, at the age of 73, he sold the company to a group of investors. The group was led by John Y. Brown Jr. and Jack C. Massey. Sanders sold the corporation for $2 million. In today's money, that amount is equivalent to many millions of dollars.

Even after selling the company, Sanders remained a visible figure. He acted as a salaried brand ambassador and maintained control over operations in Canada. In his later years, he became a critic of the company. He often spoke out against cost-cutting measures that he believed reduced the quality of the food. He famously criticized the quality of the gravy served in the restaurants. Sanders died on December 16, 1980, leaving behind a global food legacy.
