Colobinae

life science Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Colobinae are a special group of monkeys known as leaf-eating monkeys.

This group includes 61 different species found in Africa and Asia. You might see a black-and-white colobus or a gray langur. Some species, like the large-nosed proboscis monkey, look very different from others. Most of these monkeys spend their time living in trees.

They live in places like rainforests, mountains, and mangroves. However, you will not find them in dry deserts. They usually live together in social groups.

These monkeys have a very clever way to eat tough leaves.

They use a process called foregut fermentation. This means they have complex stomachs with many different parts. Tiny bacteria live inside these stomach chambers. These bacteria help break down the hard leaves. The bacteria also remove toxins from the plants. This allows the monkeys to get more protein and energy. This is how they make a healthy meal from plants. It is like how a cow or a kangaroo digests food.

Scientists have studied these monkeys for a long time.

The name Colobinae comes from an Ancient Greek word. That word is "kolobos," which means "docked." This is because some African monkeys have stub thumbs. Some researchers split the group into two tribes. One tribe is called Colobini and lives in Africa. The other tribe is called Presbytini and lives in Asia. These two groups split apart millions of years ago.

History shows us where these monkeys came from.

The oldest remains were found in the Tugen Hills of Kenya. These fossils are 12.5 million years old. In Eurasia, the oldest fossils are from Greece. These are called Mesopithecus and are 8.2 million years old. The two tribes likely split between 10 and 13 million years ago. Scientists use DNA to study how they are related. They found that some species even mix through hybridization.

There are many interesting facts about how they live.

Most colobines have long tails to help them move. The pig-tailed langur is an exception because it lacks a long tail. The colors of young monkeys often look different from adults. In some species, females start having babies at age three. Unlike other Old World monkeys, they do not have cheek pouches. They are very different from the howler monkeys found in the New World. This makes the Colobinae a truly unique family of primates.
