earth science Maturity 7-9 Next article →

Colemanite is a special mineral. It is a type of borate. This means it has boron in it. It forms in salty lakes. It grows when other rocks change. It comes from rocks called borax and ulexite.

People first found it in 1884. They found it near Furnace Creek. This is in Death Valley. It was named for William Tell Coleman. He owned a mine called Harmony Borax Works.

This mineral is very useful. It helps make heat resistant glass. This is glass that stays strong in heat. For a long time, it was the main ore of boron. An ore is a rock that holds useful things. It was the main source until 1926. Then, people found a new mineral called kernite.

Many deposits are in Turkey. The Emet mine is a big place. It has about 40% of the world's known reserves. Other sources are in Bigadiç and Kestelek. These are also in Turkey.
