Colemanite

earth science Maturity 7-9 Next article →

Colemanite is a specific type of borate mineral. Borates are minerals that contain the element boron. This mineral is important because it serves as a vital source of boron for many industries. It is classified as a calcium mineral and an inoborate. Scientists also group it as a pentahydrate mineral. This means it contains water within its structure. It is also known as a ferroelectric material. This describes how it reacts to electric fields.

The formation of colemanite is a geological process called alteration. It does not usually appear as a primary mineral. Instead, it is a secondary mineral. This means it forms from the change of other minerals. Specifically, it grows from the alteration of borax and ulexite. These minerals are found in alkaline lacustrine environments. These are salty lakes that have high levels of alkalinity. As these lakes dry up, they leave behind evaporite deposits. Within these deposits, the chemical change turns borax and ulexite into colemanite.

Colemanite belongs to several distinct mineral groups. It is part of the inoborate group. It also belongs to the monoclinic crystal system. This refers to the shape of its internal structure. Because it is a pentahydrate, it holds five molecules of water. The chemical formula for colemanite is Ca2B6O11·5H2O. It can also be written as CaB3O4(OH)3·H2O. These formulas show the specific balance of calcium, boron, and oxygen.

Humans first identified this mineral in 1884. The discovery happened near Furnace Creek in Death Valley. The mineral was named after William Tell Coleman. He lived from 1824 to 1893. Coleman was the owner of the Harmony Borax Works mine. This is the exact location where the mineral was first found. Interestingly, Coleman almost gave it a different name. He considered calling it smithite. He wanted to honor his business associate, Francis Marion Smith.

For many years, colemanite was a very important resource. It was the most important ore of boron in the world. An ore is a mineral used to extract valuable elements. This remained true until 1926. In that year, people discovered a new mineral called kernite. Kernite then became a major source of boron. Even so, colemanite remains highly significant for modern manufacturing. It is used extensively to produce heat resistant glass. This type of glass is designed to withstand very high temperatures without breaking.

Turkey is one of the most important locations for this mineral. The Emet mine is located in western Turkey. This single mine is very large. It contains about 40% of the world's known colemanite reserves. This makes Turkey a major player in the global supply. Other important sources are also located in Turkey. You can find significant amounts at Bigadiç. You can also find it at Kestelek. These sites help provide the boron needed for many products.

Understanding colemanite helps us understand how minerals transform over time. It shows how one substance can become another through chemical alteration. The presence of this mineral tells geologists about the history of ancient lakes. It proves that alkaline lacustrine environments once existed in those areas. By studying its structure, scientists learn more about the relationship between calcium and boron. This mineral connects the study of geology to the needs of modern industrial technology.
