Club sandwich

language culture Maturity 5-7 Next article →

A club sandwich is a big meal with three layers. It uses three slices of toasted bread. Most people use white bread for it. Inside, you will find meat like chicken or turkey. Many people also add fried bacon strips. It often has lettuce and tomato too. A creamy spread called mayonnaise helps the layers stay tasty.

To eat it, people often cut it into small parts. They use small sticks to hold the layers together. Some think the sandwich began at the Union Club in New York. An old recipe from 1889 used Graham bread. It had turkey or chicken and ham inside.

People make many kinds of this sandwich today. A "breakfast club" uses eggs instead of poultry. Some people add cheese, ham, or pickles. In Canada, some use rotisserie chicken. In New Zealand, it is a small tea sandwich. It often has egg mayonnaise inside. In Montreal, they serve it cold. There are even fancy kinds with salmon or crab.
