A cook adds the cheese near the end of cooking. This helps the cheese melt over the meat patty. Most cheeseburgers start with ground beef. You can add many toppings to make it special. Some people like lettuce, tomato, or onion. Others add pickles, bacon, or even chili. Many restaurants use American cheese. Other meltable kinds include Swiss, Cheddar, or Mozzarella.

People have different stories about how it began. In 1924, a teen named Lionel Sternberger may have made one. He worked at a shop in California. He dropped cheese onto a hot hamburger as an experiment. Other places claim they made it first. In 1934, a restaurant in Kentucky said they did it. By 1935, a man in Colorado got a trademark for the name. Some people like a Jucy Lucy. This is a burger with cheese hidden inside the meat. You can even stack them. A double cheeseburger has two patties and two slices of cheese. A triple has three. A quadruple has four. People even celebrate National Cheeseburger Day on September 18.
