Claude Moët lived in France a long time ago. He was a wine merchant. He also made wine.

He was the first maker in Champagne to make only sparkling wine. This is a bubbly drink.

Claude was very good at sales. He liked to meet his customers in person. He met many important people in the royal circles of Versailles. He even served the royal court. One of his loyal customers was Madame de Pompadour.

His family name has a funny story. Some say the name came from a Dutch soldier. This soldier fought with Joan of Arc. But most records show a different path. In the 1300s, the family name was Le Clerc.

People called them Moët as a nickname. This name came from a word for mouth. It was a nickname for a pout. Back then, many people used nicknames for their names. After Claude died, his grandson took over. His name was Jean-Rémy Moët. He kept the family business going.
