The name means "open country." It also means "level country." This is because the land is very flat. The ground has a lot of chalk in it.

Today, many people know this area for its wine. They make a sparkling white wine there. The cities of Troyes, Reims, and Épernay are busy centers for trade.

Long ago, the land was ruled by counts. These leaders were very important to French kings. In 1314, the area joined the French crown. In the Middle Ages, the area held big fairs. These fairs helped the economy of many lands. A writer named Chrétien de Troyes lived here too. He wrote stories about the Round Table.

In 1956, it was part of a region called Champagne-Ardenne. This area had four parts. Now, it is part of a new region called Grand Est. The map shows where it sits.
