Class consciousness is how people think about their social group. This group is called a class. A class is a set of people with a similar rank. They may share the same amount of money or jobs.

Karl Marx was a thinker who studied these groups. He believed workers needed to know their own strength. He thought this awareness could lead to a big change in society. He called the workers the proletariat. He wanted them to become the new leaders.

In the 1800s, groups in Britain became more clear. There were working classes and middle classes. There was also an upper class. This group had power and used schools to stay in charge.

Vladimir Lenin had different ideas. He thought workers mostly focused on small goals. He wanted a special group of leaders to help them. This group would teach them how to change the whole system.

Other thinkers did not agree. Ludwig von Mises thought Marx was wrong about how classes work. He believed everyone should be equal under the law. He said wealth should not change how the law treats you.
