Clapboard is a way to cover the walls of a building.

These are long, thin wood boards. They often overlap each other. This helps rain run off the walls.

In the United Kingdom and Australia, people call this weatherboard.

Long ago, people split the wood by hand. They made boards with a thin edge and a thick edge. This shape is called a feather edge. Later, mills used saws to make boards. One way is to use a radial saw. This cuts the wood from a log as it turns. This makes a vertical grain. This grain helps the wood stay strong. Another way is flat-sawn. This method was common in the British Isles. However, flat-sawn wood can cup or bend. It also does not hold paint as well.

Many types of wood are used. People use oak, pine, or spruce. Now, many use red cedar. Some wood is left plain. It turns grey as it ages. Other people use paint or stains. You can find clapboard on many buildings. This includes shops, windmills, and small houses.
