Thoreau lived during a hard time in America. He saw that many people were kept as slaves. He also did not like a war with Mexico. Thoreau believed that people must follow their own hearts. He said we should do what is right, even if a law says otherwise. He thought a government could act like a bad machine. He said citizens should act like a brake to stop that machine.

To show his ideas, Thoreau stopped paying certain taxes. This led to him going to jail. He did not feel bad about it. He felt he was doing the right thing. His ideas changed the world. Mahatma Gandhi used them to fight for India. Martin Luther King Jr. also used them for civil rights. Many leaders learned how to fight for justice without using violence.
