How can we build a timeline for the life of Jesus?

Historians try to solve this puzzle using many different clues. They look at religious books and old Roman records. They even study the movements of the stars and the moon. These sources help them estimate when major events happened. Most experts agree that Jesus was a real person. They use these methods to find date ranges for his life. It is like putting together a giant historical map.

Finding the year of his birth is the first step.

Many scholars believe he was born between 6 and 4 BC. One way to guess this is by looking at King Herod. The Gospels say Jesus was born while Herod the Great ruled. Another way is to count back from his age. One book says he was about 30 when he began preaching. If he started in AD 28, he might have been born around 2 BC. Some people even look for the Star of Bethlehem in space. They wonder if a comet or a planet was that special light.

Scholars also work to find when Jesus began his preaching.

They use the reign of Tiberius Caesar as a guide. The Gospel of Luke says John the Baptist started his work in the fifteenth year of Tiberius. Most historians say this was around AD 28 or 29. Another clue comes from the Temple in Jerusalem. The Gospel of John says the Temple had been under construction for 46 years. This also points to the years AD 28 or 29. This helps us see when his ministry likely started.

Estimating the date of his death is another big task.

Experts use five different methods to find this date. Some look at writings from non-Christian authors like Tacitus. Others work backward from the trial of the Apostle Paul in AD 51 or 52. Most scholars agree he was crucified between AD 30 and AD 36. One method uses the moon to find the right day. The Gospels say his death happened on a Friday during Passover. This requires a full moon to happen on a Friday.

Some researchers even look at a lunar eclipse for clues.

The book of Acts says the moon turned to blood. This might refer to an eclipse on 3 April AD 33. Astronomers are still discussing if people in Jerusalem could see it. New research looks at the dates of the Last Supper too. They suggest it might have been on Wednesday, 1 April AD 33. All these different paths help us understand the past. Every clue brings us closer to a clearer timeline.
