Christian deism is a unique way of thinking about faith and reason. It blends ideas from Christianity with a philosophy called deism.

Many people who follow this path focus on the moral lessons of Jesus. However, they do not believe that Jesus was a god. They see Jesus as a teacher who shared important values. This viewpoint allows people to follow Christian ethics without accepting supernatural miracles. It is a way to find meaning in both religion and the natural world.

How does this way of thinking work in daily life? Christian deists believe that God created the world and its many laws.

After creating everything, God lets the world run on its own. This means the world follows steady laws, like the law of gravity. People are seen as free agents who can make their own choices. Instead of waiting for miracles, deists use reason to understand the world. They look at nature and human hearts to find truth. They believe God's laws are naturally known by everyone.

This idea has a long and interesting history. The term "Christian deism" appeared in books during the 1700s.

Writers like Matthew Tindal and Thomas Morgan wrote about these ideas. Many thinkers from the 17th and 18th centuries used this title. They were often influenced by the writings of John Locke and John Tillotson. Some people even used the term to argue against traditional church rules. It grew out of a time when science and new ideas were changing Europe.

Several famous people are linked to these beliefs. Thomas Jefferson is perhaps the most well-known example.

In 1776, he spoke of "nature's God" in the Declaration of Independence. Jefferson even created the "Jefferson Bible" to show his views. He carefully cut out stories about miracles and divine interventions. He wanted to keep only the moral teachings of Jesus. He once thought about writing a book on this subject with Benjamin Rush. His ideas helped shape how many people viewed religion and government.

Christian deism connects to things you might already know about history. It sits between different groups like orthodox Christians and non-Christian deists.

It teaches that Jesus's main laws were to love God and love your neighbor. For a deist, a neighbor includes everyone in the natural world. They see Jesus's parables about seeds and sheep as natural lessons. These stories help explain how to live a good and kind life. By using reason, they try to live out these values every day.
