People often eat chowder with salty crackers like oyster crackers or saltines. You can even drop pieces of the crackers right on top of the bowl. This makes the dish feel special and satisfying.

There are many different ways to make this delicious meal. Clam chowder is a very popular version made with chopped clams and diced potatoes. In New England, this often includes a little bit of butter. You might also try corn chowder, which uses sweet corn instead of clams. Some people enjoy seafood chowder filled with fish and other shellfish. There is even a potato chowder that is often made with cheese.

The history of chowder is quite interesting and a bit mysterious. The exact origin of the name is not fully known by everyone. Some think it comes from the French word "chaudron," which means cauldron. A cauldron is a large metal pot used for cooking over a fire. It may also come from the word "chaudière," which means bucket in Quebecois French. Early settlers in Canada used buckets to stew clams and fish with bacon. This helped shape the dish we know today.

Chowder started as a simple meal made on ships long ago. Sailors used hard biscuits to help thicken their soups. It arrived in North America over 250 years ago with immigrants. In 1766, a botanist named Joseph Banks wrote about it in his journal. He described it as a luxury when it was made well. He noted it could be made with salt pork and fish. Even in 1751, an American newspaper wrote about making a "chouder."

Today, chowder is enjoyed in many different places around the world. In Bermuda, fish chowder is the national dish of the country. It uses fish, tomato, and onion seasoned with black rum. In New Zealand, people make seafood chowders in the New England style. They use milk or cream and often include local shellfish. In the United States, January 21 is even celebrated as National New England Clam Chowder Day. It is a food that brings people together in many cultures.
