The island divides the river into two paths. One path goes north and one goes south. It sits right before the river meets the East China Sea. The island is part of the city of Shanghai. It is about two hours away from central Shanghai.

Long ago, the island was not one big piece. It started as small groups of sand and land. The Yangtze River caused many changes. Some islands grew, while others sank into the water. Over many years, these pieces joined together. People even worked to make the island much larger. Between 1950 and 2010, the island doubled in size.

Today, the island has many green spaces. You can visit Dongping National Forest Park. It is the largest forest park in Shanghai. There are also wetlands and nature reserves. You might even see rare finless porpoises in the water.
