Chips Rafferty was a prominent Australian actor and film producer. He became known as the "living symbol of the typical Australian." His professional career spanned from the late 1930s until his death in 1971. Rafferty worked in major Australian feature films, British productions, and American movies. He was a versatile performer who understood many aspects of Australian life. This deep connection to his culture helped him achieve international fame.

Before entering the film industry, Rafferty held many diverse roles. He was born in 1909 near Broken Hill, New South Wales. At age 16, he began an apprenticeship as an iron moulder at Clyde Engineering Works. He later worked as an opal miner, a sheep shearer, and a drover. He also spent time as a pearl diver. During World War II, he served as a Flying Officer in the Royal Australian Air Force. These varied experiences provided him with a broad perspective on life.

Rafferty made his film debut at Cinesound Studios in the 1940 comedy Dad Rudd, M.P. Director Ken G. Hall cast him as a fireman because of his tall and skinny appearance. This role provided a visual contrast to other actors. His career accelerated when he was cast in the 1940 film Forty Thousand Horsemen. Directed by Charles Chauvel, this film focused on the Battle of Beersheba in 1917. Although he was relatively inexperienced, Rafferty's screen presence earned him significant acclaim. The film became one of the most-seen Australian movies of its time.

After the war, Rafferty achieved major success with Ealing Studios. He starred in the 1946 film The Overlanders, which depicted a cattle drive during wartime. Harry Watt, the producer, referred to Rafferty as an "Australian Gary Cooper." This film was both a critical and commercial success. Ealing Studios signed him to a long-term contract because of his performance. He also appeared in the popular children's movie Bush Christmas in 1947. These roles established him as a true international film star.

In the 1950s, Rafferty transitioned into movie production. He partnered with producer-director Lee Robinson to create several films. Their first collaboration, The Phantom Stockman, was a profitable venture. They followed this with King of the Coral Sea, which introduced actor Rod Taylor to audiences. They also collaborated with French filmmakers on the New Guinea adventure Walk Into Paradise. However, this period also included financial difficulty. Several of their subsequent films, such as Dust in the Sun, failed to make money.

To recover from financial losses, Rafferty returned to acting in various capacities. He appeared in American television shows like Gunsmoke, Daktari, and The Monkees. He also acted in the Elvis Presley film Double Trouble in 1967. In 1962, he experienced a serious health event following a physical altercation in a London club. The incident caused a myocardial infarction, which is a heart attack. This event revealed a heart condition he had not previously known about. This medical issue cost him roles in two major film productions.

Rafferty's final years were marked by a return to his Australian roots. He appeared in the 1966 comedy They're a Weird Mob, which was a large local success. His final film role was in the 1971 movie Wake in Fright. Critics noted his intense and disturbing performance in this film. He died in Sydney on May 27, 1971, at the age of 62. He collapsed from a heart attack while walking down a street shortly after finishing his work. His legacy remains tied to the history of Australian cinema.
